LinkResearchTools Review- A detailed look into tools to aid post penguin recovery.
I was recently involved in a project that was hit by Google’s Penguin penalty. The back link profile on this site was highly questionable at best. In addition to utilising some other tools, I used some excellent tools from LRT to diagnose and begin the recovery process.
It is my first time reviewing LRT, and I did not have full access to all their technology. Hence, I purchase a paid account.I subscribed to the starter pack which provided me with 14 SEO tools.
A help guide is available listing all the help contents in a pdf for this tool.
The following steps are taken to fix the site affected by the Penguin penalty.
- Run the detox report and disavow links via Google Webmasters.
- Find opportunities for high-quality links.
- Run a Common backlink tool report to find common links amongst your competitors. Try and get listed on these shared links.
Domain-wide Link Detox Risk report was most useful. It showed how many links pointing to the domain were of high risk.
Domain DTOXRISK was 10708 which was not meaningful for a first time user. However judging by the representation of the chart it looked like a serious matter.
I found that 96% of the links were high risk. On closer inspection of these links, they looked like automated links.
Following is the report that came up assigning a percentage to the number of links at risk.
On further inspection
Notice the Rules column.
This column gives you a breakdown of the reason this link seems at high risk. For example, TOX1 is because Google does not index the domain. Here is an entire page about the explanation of these rules.Three levels of TOX and up to 31 levels of suspicious links.
So, all in all, a pretty good report for all the links that are spammy in nature. This report also consists of an excellent function of generating a Google Disavow link file.
Once the report was submitted, we noted the changes in the rankings within a few days.We logged the search positions of the main keywords for the first 100 positions. The rankings improved dramatically with most of them appearing on the top 100 within a few days.
Note the screenshot below.
The LRT also gives you an option to reprocess the same report again without utilising any credits. After reprocessing the report in a few days, the DTOX risk dropped to 4023 as seen in the following screenshot.
2/3 of the risk was mitigated.
After having resolved the issue of risky links, the next step was to build a certain amount of trust to this website.
The SERP report lets you filter parameters like search only for a specific kind of a site or filter them based on trust.
Here is a screenshot of the SERP report.
There are some fascinating features on this report, and this report can become your go to report for link building.
- Note the site type column. This column can be filtered for blogs, forums, news type sites and so on.
- One of the features of this report is the “linked” column. The linked column tells you whether you have already posted a link on this page. It is great because it helps you keep track of the links you are building.
- You get a fair indication of all the important metrics like domains, C blocks, IP addresses, Edu links, .gov links, Mozrank, CEMPER power+trust and heaps of other metrics. This data helps to create an educated strategy for improving rankings for your site.
Overall this report is very useful and is “go to report” for link building efforts.
The standard backlink tool finds common backlinks amongst your competitors. So you can go through the common backlinks and find the most appropriate pages where you can get a backlink.
Although this report did not provide a unique perspective on any particular information, it certainly helped to have this data collated for you.
The following is a nice screenshot and the columns 1,2,3 and 4 are the columns for the competitors sites.
This report clearly indicates which links are critical.
In addition to these reports, the LRT also has a link alert facility. For a starter package, you can monitor new links to 1 site. You can see their plan limits here.In the first few days, I was notified of 75 new links which although not created during that time gave me a good CSV to work off in the future.
In addition to the tools being useful, I could not take advantage of the link detox boost, Competitive link detox and some other tools. I felt that for € 99 a user should at least be given an introductory credit for each tool to see whether an upgrade may be suitable for them. It also raises the profile of the best tools that are available.
The support from the LRT was good, and they kept on following up until the issue was resolved so a plus there.
I accidently ran a lot of bulk report via the Excel “select all” function. There is a bit of user experience issue there for someone new using the tool. Maybe a warning suggesting that bulk reports will run and your credits will be utilised is necessary.
The filtering on excel sheets in all reports is sometimes slow. If you wanted to make a bulk selection, then you would have to wait for the site to process an individual selection first and only then you can continue. Maybe a “process” or “ok” button is required to process the filters on excel report.
Some great links were caught up in “bad links” or Detox report. Caution should be advised when using the bulk disavow request report. However, I found that the accuracy of the report was indeed very high.
For some reason, I found that a high amount of emphasis is placed on Nofollow links. According to their FAQ’s they also indicate that No follow links can be harmful. So there is a different result if NOFOLLOW links are used for your Domain DTOXRISK.
The results of Method 2 (“Evaluate NOFOLLOW”) are alternative evaluations of DTOXRISK™ for all links including NOFOLLOW links, based on the assumption that NOFOLLOW links should be evaluated as well, although with a different calculation of risk scores.
One might consider the implications of such consideration.
In conclusion, I found that these tools although paid in nature are a wonderful set of tools if the impact of traffic or keyword loss on your business is high. I will continue to update this page as I continue to use these tools.
